EXPANDED PROGRAM ON IMMUNIZATION
EXPANDED PROGRAM ON IMMUNIZATION (EPI)
Protecting Our Children’s Future Through Vaccination.
What is the Immunization Program?
The Immunization Program of the NCD Provincial Health Authority is dedicated to protecting the health of our community, with a primary focus on ensuring all children under 5 years of age receive life-saving vaccines. Vaccine-preventable diseases pose the greatest risk to young children. Our program follows the Papua New Guinea National Immunization Schedule to provide comprehensive protection against these diseases from infancy onwards. We also offer vaccines for other age groups as recommended.
Key Benefits
- Protecting Your Young Child:Vaccination is the most effective way to protect your baby and young child from serious diseases like measles, polio, tetanus, and whooping cough, which can be especially dangerous for them.
- Building a Healthy Start in Life:Immunization gives children the healthiest possible start in life, allowing them to grow and thrive without the threat of preventable diseases.
- Community Immunity (Herd Immunity) – Protecting the Most Vulnerable:When most children are vaccinated, it creates ‘herd immunity,’ which is particularly important for protecting newborns who are too young to be vaccinated and other vulnerable individuals.
- Preventing Childhood Illness and Death:Vaccines have dramatically reduced childhood illness and death from preventable diseases, allowing children to reach their full potential.
- Safe and Effective Protection:Vaccines are rigorously tested and safe for young children. The benefits of protecting your child through vaccination far outweigh any risks.
Services Offered
- Routine Childhood Immunizatio:“Our core service is providing free routine immunizations for children from birth up to 5 years of age according to the National Immunization Schedule. This includes vaccines such as:
- BCG (Bacillus Calmette–Guérin)
- Hepatitis B Vaccine
- OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine)
- Pentavalent Vaccine (DPT-HepB-Hib)
- PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine) – for Pneumococcal disease
- Measles-Rubella (MR) Vaccine
- Vitamin A Supplementation
- Maternal Immunization:Vaccination for pregnant women to protect newborns from birth, such as:
- Tetanus Toxoid (TT) Vaccine – to prevent neonatal tetanus (crucial for newborn health)
- Catch-Up Immunization for Children Under 5:We prioritize catch-up immunization for children under 5 who have missed doses. Ensuring young children are fully vaccinated is our priority.
- School-Based Immunization Programs (for older children):We also conduct school-based programs which may include vaccines for older children and adolescents.
- Immunization Awareness and Education:We conduct public awareness campaigns and provide educational materials to promote childhood immunization and address parents’ questions and concerns about vaccinating their young children.
- Outreach Immunization Services (reaching young children in communities):Our outreach programs are particularly aimed at reaching young children in communities, especially in difficult to reach areas, to ensure they receive timely vaccinations.
- Vaccine Information and Counselling:Our trained healthcare workers provide vaccine information and counselling, particularly to parents and caregivers of young children, to support informed decisions about vaccination.
